Fast Facts on Castile and Leon
The large, northerly region of Castile and Leon comprises the provinces of Leon, Palencia, Burgos, Soria, Segovia, Avila, Salamanca, Zamora and Valladolid. Its capital is the city of Valladolíd. Surrounded by spectacular scenery, magnificent unspoilt countryside and brimming with cultural treasures, this region is - literally - the "land of the castles". Birthplace of the Castilian Spanish language, the national hero El Cid, and the mystical Saint Teresa of Avila, it abounds with picture-postcard pretty medieval villages and impressive Gothic cathedrals.
