Fast Facts on Castile and Leon

The large, northerly region of Castile and Leon comprises the provinces of Leon, Palencia, Burgos, Soria, Segovia, Avila, Salamanca, Zamora and Valladolid.

Its capital is the city of Valladolíd.

Surrounded by spectacular scenery, magnificent unspoilt countryside and brimming with cultural treasures, this region is - literally - the "land of the castles".

Birthplace of the Castilian Spanish language, the national hero El Cid, and the mystical Saint Teresa of Avila, it abounds with picture-postcard pretty medieval villages and impressive Gothic cathedrals.

Come here to follow the route of the castles ... or the pilgrims´ trail towards Santiago de Compostela ...

Visit the golden sandstone city of Salamanca - home to Spain´s oldest univerisity, two cathedrals, and a beautiful Main Square.

Wander round the medieval town of Avila, encircled by awe-inspiring, 11th century walls.

Enjoy Segovia´s Roman aqueduct, alcazar and Gothic cathedral.

Marvel at the 800,000-year-old remains of the archaeolgoical site of Atapuerta - east of Burgos.

Bored you won´t be in Castilla y Leon!
