tiger mussels



One of the better-known spanish tapas recipes using mussels is "tiger mussels" or "mejillones tigre".

In Spain, mussels are one of the most affordable protein foods.

Delicious as they are, you can get a little tired of always eating them steamed.

So try this tapas recipe out for a different way of enjoying mussels!

Remove mussels from shells once cooked, but remember not to discard the shells as you'll need them later in the recipe!

spanish tapas recipes - tiger mussels (mejillones tigre)

Ingrediants - for 4 people

  • 500 gr fresh mussels - steamed, and finely chopped
  • 1 onion - peeled and finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic - peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 hot chilli pepper - finely chopped
  • 50 gr flour
  • 200 ml milk
  • Seasoned flour for coating
  • 1 egg - beaten
  • 150 gr breadcrumbs
  • Olive oil
  • Method

    1. Heat a little oil in a pan, add the onion and garlic, and soften.
    2. Mix in the chopped chilli and mussels.
    3. Season, and cook for 2-3 minutes.
    4. Stir in the flour and cook for a minute.
    5. Whisk in the milk and bring to boil - stirring.
    6. Set mixture aside to cool - it will thicken further.
    7. Spoon mixture into mussel shells.
    8. Coat in flour, dip in egg and cover with breadcrumbs.
    9. Deep fry in hot oil until golden, and serve.
