Beautiful Barcelona is a popular and busy city, competing closely with the country's capital - Madrid - as Spain's number one destination.
In fact, over recent years, Barcelona's tremendous mix of superb culture and places of interest, plus glamorous shops and nightlife, have rendered it an even more popular holiday destination than the country's capital.
But, what are your best options for travelling to this vibrant city ... how do you get around once you've arrived ... and, what about travel to nearby places of interest?
We address all of these issues - plus more! - below.

travel spain barcelona ... how do I get there?
1. AIR
Airline travel is fast ... and now relatively affordable.
Barcelona's main airport is called El Prat de Llobregat.
You'll discover all the facts about Barcelona Airport on this page.
In brief, Barcelona's El Prat de Llobregat Airport lies some 12 kilometers from the city center, with an excellent selection of flights heading there - all main European airlines ... whilst those of you travelling from the United States should check out Iberia, Spanair, Delta, and US Airways. Barcelona is also well-served as far as domestic flights go.
Other nearby airports to consider include Girona Airport - some 90 kilometers from Barcelona - and Reus Airport, about 100 kilometers away.
2. TRAIN
Barcelona has various railway stations. The main one - and the one of most interest to you for national (and a few international) services - is
Estació de Sants, located slightly west of central Barcelona.
Discover train timetables and online ticket purchase options under the English section of the RENFE website.
3. COACH
Coach travel is more affordable than train, very comfortable, but does take longer.
Again, Barcelona has a number of bus/coach stations, the main one being Estació de Nord in the Carrer d'Alí Bei, near the Arc de Triomf metro station.
For Spanish coach timetables and online ticket purchase, visit the English section of ALSA.
travel spain barcelona - in and around the city
Barcelona boasts an excellent public transport system, its network being managed by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB).
1. METRO
The quickest and easiest way round the city is by metro - in other words, the underground or subway!
It's cheap, covers most of the city, and offers stations close to all main attractions.
A single metro ticket costs 1.25 euros ... ticket machines can be put into English.
To save money, buy a T-10 Card. Available from metro stations, this card costs just under 7 euros and can be used for 10 journeys on the metro, bus or FGC (Barcelona's urban railway line).
Also, more than one person can use the same ticket.
The only drawback to the metro, is that you can't use it late at night.
2. BUSES
Although Barcelona offers an extremely comprehensive bus network, it's quicker and easier to use the metro or FGC - except at night, when the metro closes down.
Then, Barcelona's yellow NITBUS or "night bus" comes into its own. Running every 30-45 minutes - from 11 pm to around 4 pm - you'll find all of them stop at the very central Plaza Cataluyna.
3. TAXIS
Barcelona's black-and-yellow taxis are reasonably affordable, with a compulsory meter showing you how much your fare is - but remember, a surcharge will be made for luggage.
Telephone numbers are as follows:
93 225 00 00
93 490 22 22
93 330 08 04
93 212 22 22
93 358 11 11
93 300 38 11
And for handicapped persons, the number is:
93 358 11 11
