The Balearic Islands lie off the east coast of mainland Spain and are in the Mediterranean Sea. All types flock to them for their vacation - royalty, filmstars, celebrities, but, most important of all ... the ordinary "man-in-the-street".

They include three major islands - Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza - plus three smaller ones - Formentera, Cabrera and Dragonera.

Mallorca is the largest, its capital, Palma, having a seafront location with a crescent of sensational, white sand.

There are 76 beaches on the island and 35 of them possess the coveted Blue Flag status. Some of the more popular beaches for include Magaluf, Palma Nova, Cala San Vicente, Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia, Cala d Or, Ca n Pastilla and El Arenal.

Ibiza, with its white sands and crystal-blue waters is renowned for its swinging night-life ... fantastic for the young or young-at-heart.

The longest, sandiest beach of the island can be found at Playa d en Bossa in the south and this gem of a beach is perfect for families. The pulsating San Antonio, in the north-west, is famous for its clubbing. More peaceful resorts include Portinatix, Es Canar and Santa Eulalia.

The exotic Canary Islands consist of 5 main holiday islands - La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote - plus the two unspoilt islands of Hierro and Gomera.

This attractive archipelago is otherwise known as "The Land of Eternal Spring" because any time of year is perfect for enjoying a vacation Spain, with guaranteed sunshine, virtually no rainfall and non-stop tourist activity.

It is, in fact, located closer to Africa than the Spanish mainland and in the Atlantic Ocean.

Tenerife is the largest island with a lively tourist industry. The volcanic crater of Mount Teide is its major landmark, which results in the beaches of Tenerife being black by nature. Nevertheless, there are several beaches consisting of imported sand from the Sahara Desert - talk about carrying coals to Newcastle!

Some of its better-known beaches include Playa de las Americas, with its hectic night-life; the more sophisticated resort of Los Cristianos; and the relaxed, shingle beach of Playa Paraiso.

Gran Canaria is another bustling island with a sensational night-life. Its capital is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Las Canteras Beach has over 3 kms of golden sand and warm, azure sea.

For those interested in windsurfing, world championships are held at Bah a Feliz and El Aguila Beach.

Fuerteventura is the "beachiest" of the islands and wonderfully peaceful and quiet. It has some spectacular white beaches at Playa Blanca and Corralejo.

Lanzarote also possesses some of the best beaches of the Canaries, from charming coves around the Papagayo Peninsula to the exuberant lifestyle of the Puerto del Carmen area. Other resorts ideal for a vacation Spain include Playa de los Pocillos and Matagorda.

La Palma is known as "la Isla Bonita" because of its immense natural beauty, although the lush green of this island is a result of it having a slightly higher rainfall than the other islands. Ideal for the "get-away-from-it-all" vacation Spain, it offers excellent beaches at Los Cancajos, Puerto Naos and Tazacorte.
