There’s red … white … with brandy … without brandy …
You’ll even find a “whatever drinks you’ve got leftover in the cupboard” sangria!
Generally speaking, however, you should make sangria using a full-bodied red wine.
To this, you add a variety of fruity flavourings, plus a bit of spirit – such as brandy – to give it a kick.
Whichever type you decide on, make sure it’s icy-cold before serving.
Below, you’ll find a fairly simple sangria recipe.
Alter this according to taste, or to what you have available.

Spanish Sangria Recipes
- 1 bottle dry, full-bodied red wine
- 1 can fizzy orange – chilled
- 1 can fizzy lemon – chilled
- 1 glass Spanish brandy
- 1 apple – chopped
- 1 lemon – thinly sliced
- 1 orange – thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon sugar (or to taste)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- Ice cubes
- Put fruit into large jug/bowl.
- Pour over the brandy.
- Stir in red wine and cinnamon.
- Leave in fridge to chill as long as possible.
- Remove cinnamon stick.
- Add fizzy drinks, sugar and ice cubes.
- Serve, and enjoy!
